Providing advanced generation and grid connection studies for conventional and renewable energy systems
VandA Engineering has extensive experience delivering generation and grid connection studies across solar, wind, gas, and embedded generation projects, from multi-hundred-megawatt offshore wind farms and utility-scale solar plants to industrial and landfill-gas generators.
We combine advanced power system modelling, detailed power quality and harmonic analysis, and on-site investigation to resolve equipment failures, secure grid compliance, and optimise network performance.
Our work with Ofgem, National Grid, and DNOs on projects such as Gunfleet, Thanet, Sheringham Shoal, Karapinar, and major embedded generation schemes demonstrates our ability to de-risk complex generation connections and deliver robust, compliant, and commercially effective solutions for developers and asset owners.

Karapinar Solar Farm – Inverter Failures
VandA Engineering investigated high-voltage equipment failures at the Karapinar solar complex, comprising an 800 MW and a 200 MW solar farm. The root causes were identified through detailed system analysis and on-site measurements.
Gwynt y Môr Wind Farm
Extensive harmonic propagation and voltage distortion studies were undertaken following wind turbine failures caused by filter equipment outages.
Gunfleet Wind Farm
VandA Engineering designed the 164 MW Gunfleet wind farm connection to the 132 kV grid at Clacton. The scope included dynamic studies, power flow, fault level and power quality analysis. The connection is provided by a single-circuit submarine and underground 132 kV cable system.
Thanet Wind Farm
A 132 kV grid connection and power quality assessment was completed, including definition of network operating regimes, extensive simulations, and the development of new power quality indices in liaison with Ofgem.
Sheringham Shoal Wind Farm
A 132 kV connection assessment was undertaken covering system capacity, cabling and power quality. The project involved extensive simulation studies and the development of new power quality indices for the Transmission Owner in liaison with Ofgem.
Embedded Generation – Cliff Quay
VandA Engineering assessed the impact of embedded generation at Cliff Quay in Suffolk, comprising two 70 MVA generators. The study evaluated power flow, short-circuit levels, and power quality effects on the local network.
Hole House Gas Storage Facility
Specialist support was provided to the Owner’s Engineer for a 15 MW variable-speed-drive gas compressor installation at the Hole House gas storage facility near Crewe. The work included power quality assessment at the 33 kV point of common coupling and harmonic filtering design.
Kennet Embedded Generation
An assessment of embedded generation at Kennet in Suffolk was undertaken for a landfill-gas-fuelled power station with ten 625 kVA generators. The study covered power flow, short-circuit levels, and power quality.
Smurfit Kappa – Townsend Hook Generators
Grid connection and power quality compliance studies were carried out for two new 5 MW synchronous generators, including G99, G5/5, P28, and P29 assessments. Detailed network and generator models were developed, including gas turbines and governors, synchronous machines, excitation and voltage regulation systems, stabilisers, limiters, and protection functions.
