Grid Code and Distribution Code Compliance
VandA Engineering provides compliance studies and technical assessments to verify that renewable, rail, and large industrial connections meet the Client’s requirements and the applicable Grid and Distribution Codes. We support connections including wind farms, solar farms, battery storage, railway traction supplies, and large commercial and industrial loads. Our expertise covers compliance with the NESO Grid Code and ENA Engineering Recommendations G99, G5/5, P28, and P29.
Insulation Coordination, Transients and System Dynamics
A full range of transient and system dynamic studies is provided, from lightning and switching surge analysis to equipment performance and compliance assessments. These include insulation coordination, surge arrester selection, ferroresonance, temporary overvoltages, inrush currents, and other transient phenomena. Dynamic studies are undertaken to evaluate system and equipment behaviour during faults and planned operating conditions such as motor starting, load rejection, compensation switching, controller dynamics, stability, and subsynchronous oscillations.
Protection and Control
VandA Engineering offers the design, testing, and commissioning of protection and control systems, either as part of a substation project or as a standalone service. This includes protection scheme design, relay settings studies, and assessment of instrument transformers and protection relays under dynamic and transient conditions. We also design switchgear control systems, interlocking, and automated operating sequences, supporting clients where protection system issues arise during operation.
Earthing and Bonding
Comprehensive earthing system design is provided as part of system or substation projects or as a standalone service, including earthing philosophy, earth mat design, and bonding. VandA Engineering has extensive experience in complex arrangements such as transformer neutral earthing, segregated earthing systems, and a range of DC earthing configurations.
Network Design
Complete or partial high-voltage network design is delivered to suit client requirements, from feasibility and concept design through detailed design, procurement, installation, and operational support. VandA Engineering can also manage all liaison with National Grid and Distribution Network Operators on the client’s behalf.
Traction Power System Design
VandA Engineering provides full AC and DC railway traction power system design, including overhead line, third-rail, and fourth-rail systems, from feasibility and concept through to commissioning. Services cover traction supplies, earthing and bonding, station and auxiliary power, power quality, grid interfaces, and AC/DC conversion systems.
Cable System Design
Complete HV and LV cable system design is provided, from simple rating studies to detailed design, procurement, installation, and testing specifications. VandA Engineering can also verify third-party designs, specify specialist cables and installation methods, and assess existing cable systems to determine condition, upgrade, or replacement requirements.
Substation Design
Substation design services are offered for systems from low voltage to 400 kV, covering all types of switchgear. This includes feasibility studies, technical and procurement specifications, layout design, protection and control, and independent verification and assurance of third-party designs.
Compensation and Filter Design
VandA Engineering designs power quality and reactive power solutions ranging from simple capacitor-based compensation and filters to advanced dynamic systems such as active filters, Static Var Compensators (SVCs), and load balancing equipment.
Design Management and Client Engineering
VandA Engineering can manage the entire design process from concept through procurement to completion, or act as Client Engineer, independently reviewing and assuring external designs and submissions.
